He said Star Trek is too “philosophical”? Screw that noise.
I don’t know when this interview happened but I AM SAD AND ANGRY NOW
The philosophies in Star Trek are kinda part of the actual setting. If you don’t get that, why are you allowed to make Star Trek movies.
Sigh. The whole point of Star Trek is that it’s philosophical. If you don’t want philosophical Science Fiction, there’s plenty of that for you to enjoy, but Star Trek is philosophical. Philosophy is part of Star Trek’s DNA, and if you’re given the captain’s chair, you’d better damn well respect that.
Hold up- JJ isn’t disregarding the philosophical side of Star Trek (or at least that doesn’t seem to be his intention, I’m sure people can argue about whether or not that came across in the film(s).) What he’s saying is it was too philosophical for him, which is a perfectly valid view, whether or not you agree. Different people like different things.
You can’t make a movie just for fans, you’ve got to make something that’s enjoyable for everyone. So having people involved in the creation for Star Trek that were unfamiliar with the franchise, people like JJ who’d seen some, and writers that were major fans from the get-go seems like a pretty smart plan. Pretty respectful. Your director is familiar with the content, there’s people there making sure he stays true to the original material and someone else making sure it still makes sense to someone who maybe hasn’t seen Star Trek before.
I fail to see how JJ Abrams acknowledging that he didn’t like Star Trek’s ‘philosophical’ nature automatically means he’s disrespecting that aspect of the franchise, or that he shouldn’t be allowed to make Star Trek movies.
When I was little I used to watch Star Trek with my Dad, not the original Series, but I’d watch Captain Picard and Janeway do their things and get excited each time the borg showed up. When I was in college I’d catch episodes of the original and chuckle. I wrote a comparative essay about one episode.
I enjoyed Star Trek (2009) a lot, so did my Dad, and he’s watched a lot more Star Trek than I. So did my sisters and they’d never seen any Star Trek. I think JJ’s done a pretty damn good job in the captain’s chair.
(I should not I haven’t gotten a chance to see Into Darkness, I’m studying abroad. Maybe JJ’s massacred things and my argument’s completely invalid.)
**edit** Additionally, after reading some other people’s responses to this, JJ was talking about when he was a kid. He’s rewatched the show since getting the job and enjoyed it a lot more.

I feel the same. ): I really enjoyed Loki in Thor and the pre-Avengers avengers fans were all super enthusiastic about the what-ifs. Now it’s a whooooooooole lot of Tom Hiddleston obsessions and some very heated arguments about whether Loki is a victim or a villain.
I think it’s simply because the fandom’s bigger now, and as such that tiny percentage of crazy that I’m sure existed before, now consists of a whoooole lot more people.
But honestly, I would really like to stop seeing posts about Tom’s Hiddleston’s hands/adam’s apple/eye direction or how in that one shot of Loki from the new trailer shows a pixel worth of chest hair. Does no one else find that level of objectification/obsession disturbing? o___o;
Ahahaha, I made the cast of DA2 using Icon Generator
The other guys weren’t as successful, but I like these ones.
…I love this game. :D
This is happening right now in my country Venezuela. All around the country Militaries are killing people just because we are defending what is Good. We want justice! We were doing a pacific protest and then they came and started to shoot and use gas against people and the government says that people need to show respect for the militaries. People are being seriously injured and murdered. Respect? Democracy? Peace? NICOLAS YOU ARE NOT MY PRESIDENT YOU COWARD.
GUYS PLEASE RB, I KNOW THAT EVERYONE IS WORRIED ABOUT WHAT’S HAPPENING IN BOSTON BUT WE ARE ABOUT TO GO ON A CIVIL WAR IN VENEZUELA!!
THEY JUST MADE MADURO TAKE THE OATH AS PRESIDENT, THEY’RE BURNING THE BALLOT BOXES, AND THEY’RE LEAVING THE COUNTRY WITH ALL THE PEOPLE’S MONEY
Let’s add to that that no International entity recognizes the election’s results and are asking for a recount, yet the CNE allowed Maduro to take the oath (wich was supposed to be on the 19th). The CNE’s president is leaving the country now.
We’re officially in a dictatorship.

Birds that sound like Tim Allen? Yes? Yes.
Galaxy Quest ILU.
DISNEY IS CUTTING THEIR HAND-DRAWN ANIMATION DEPARTMENT
I’m so mad.
Sort of, kind of, that’s not really 100% accurate.
These animators are not solely traditional animators, they know Maya. I mean really, when was the last traditionally animated Disney film released? No studio is going to keep you when they don’t have work for you.
Is it shitty that Disney is firing some stellar, long time animators? Yes. Is it because they were traditional animators? That is up for debate. It may have more to do with office politics, wages, etc. In any case, these people have talent, and they’ll find work.
I animated! Whaaaaaat.
